Improvements |
Issues with permissions is one of the most common support requests, and this should make setup easier. For users that experience permissions issues, we now remove Bartender permissions automatically by running |
Image comparison improvements |
Due to changes in the menu bar icon image data supplied by macOS, I had to revisit the image comparison algorithm, I have taken this opportunity improve the algorithms ability to spot useful differences, and ignore non important changes. Basically its better at ignoring light/dark mode, resolution or menu bar size differences, and better at spotting intentional color changes (such as part of an icon turning red), or shape changes. |
Re-added the ability to only use the Bartender Bar on screens with a notch |
Now you can once again set Bartender to only use the Bartender Bar on screens with a notch. |
CPU usage creeping up over days |
With a menu bar style applied it was possible for the CPU usage to start increasing over days, this has been fixed. |
Small improvement to menu bar style when switching spaces |
It could take a second for the menu bar style to be applied when changing spaces, this has been fixed. |
Small improvements to image comparisons |
Making small incremental improvements to image comparisons. |
Fix for highlight showing when Bartenders menu bar item set to be hidden |
This has been fixed. |
Bartender Advanced settings window resizing causing window to move offscreen |
I still have not tracked down what in AppKit is causing this, but I have disabled resizing in Advanced settings to prevent this, until I can find the issue. |
Bugs in the new image comparison trigger condition |
There were a number of small bugs reported for the new image comparison trigger conditions. These have been fixed. |
Image comparison triggers (formally show for update image comparisons) are back |
With macOS 14.1 Apple implemented changes I requested so I could recreate this feature without macOS showing the screen capture purple menu bar item.
Re-added the ability to leave menu bar items to the right of the Bartender menu bar item |
This feature will keep any items to the right of the Bartender menu bar item always visible, even when Bartender swaps out your shown items for your hidden ones. |
Re-added the ability to always or never swap out shown items for hidden items |
This was previously done automatically, only when there wasn't enough room to show your items unless swapped, now you can choose to keep it automatically, or never do this, or always do it. |
macOS music recognition (Shazam) menu bar item cannot be hidden |
Apple have made the music recognition (Shazam) menu bar item a special menu bar item, that demands to be visible and cannot be hidden. Bartender now respects this. |
Image comparison triggers firing for certain color changes |
There was a bug in Bartender, that would mean icons that just changed colors a certain amount would not fire the image trigger condition. This has been fixed. |
Image comparison triggers not getting checked when icon had transparent center |
There was a bug in Bartender, that would stop it checking icons with transparent centers sometimes (it thought they were blank icons). This has been fixed. |
Proton VPN popup showing when it shouldn't |
Looking at the opensource code for Proton VPN I saw they already had a specific compatibility fix for Bartender, this did not work with Bartender 5, I have changed Bartender 5 so this compatibility fix can work again. Big thanks to the Proton Devs. |
Menu bar style not applying correctly on some none english language systems |
Due to name changes some none english language systems the wallpaper would not get drawn around rounded menu bar styles, this has been fixed. |
Compatibility with Bitwarden app |
I have found a workaround to prevent Bitwarden showing its UI when its menu bar item is moved. |
Typos and spellings |
Thanks to the users reporting these. They have been fixed. |

Compatibility with Sip app |
I have found a workaround to prevent Sip showing its UI when its menu bar item is moved. |
Menu Bar Style adjustment |
When you have menu bar style setup with separate sides and below menu bar rounding, it gives a black background between the two sides of the menu bar (great for hiding the notch). In previous versions this would leave a 1px strip of the desktop wallpaper visible above an windows positioned just below the menu bar, this has been fixed. |
Menu Bar Style showing above Firefox and VPN fullscreen windows |
Firefox and VPN can both use none-native UI for their fullscreen modes; this was not detected by Bartender, so the menu bar style was applied above the fullscreen window. This has been fixed. |

Menu bar item layout lost when ⌘+dragging in menu bar |
If Bartender had hidden your shown items, to make room to display your hidden items, and you ⌘+dragged a menu bar item in the menu bar, your layout would be lost. This has been fixed. |
Rounded corners not applied if only menu bar style setting set |
This has been fixed. |
Reduced CPU usage when redering menu bar style with multiple spaces |
Bartender was rendering the menu bar on spaces not currently visible/active. This has been fixed. |

Swipe not working for a second time without leaving menu bar |
It was possible for swipe to stop working after initial swipe until the mouse left and re-entered the menu bar, this has been fixed. |
Setapp users menu bar style not working as well |
Due to a setting difference between Setapp and normal version of the app, menu bar styling may not have worked as well at it should, this has been fixed. |

Wifi Trigger, triggering incorrectly |
Bartender 5 in macOS Sonoma was using rssi value to detect a active wifi network, as SSID in macOS Sonoma now requires location services, this should report 0 for no network connection, but also reports 0 for some users when connected. I have changed Bartender logic to now check more network values to determine if a wifi interface is connected. |

Added back option to use Bartender Bar |
In macOS Sonoma getting images of menu bar items that are offscreen causes the purple "Bartender is Capturing your screen" menu bar item to show, as such this happens when the Bartender Bar shows your menu bar items. So until I could come up with a solution I had disabled the Bartender Bar. But it seems many of you REALLY like the Bartender Bar so I have re-enabled the option to use it, but it is turned off by default. |

Added back option to use Bartender Bar |

Updates |
Bartender is now part of the Applause family! We’re a small team of indie devs based in NYC that has been using Bartender for years. We’re excited to continue delivering updates and improvements to make Bartender better than ever. We are enhancing privacy in this update by removing Amplitude product analytics, which was added in version 5.0.52. This was originally included to count the number of users encountering issues with permissions outlined here: https://www.macbartender.com/Bartender5/PermissionIssues/. |

I still have not tracked down what in AppKit is causing this, but I have disabled resizing in Advanced settings to prevent this, until I can find the issue. |
Bugs in the new image comparison trigger condition |
There were a number of small bugs reported for the new image comparison trigger conditions. These have been fixed. |

Compatibility with Focus app |
I have worked with the developer of the Focus app to fix a compatibility issue between our two apps, that would prevent Focus from showing with Bartender, and could cause Bartender to misbehave, this is now fixed. |
Items not showing when new macOS Sonoma "show desktop" active |
Items would now show/hide or move, if the new macOS Sonoma "show desktop" by clicking on the desktop was active. This has been fixed. |
Show on hover in fullscreen |
Show on hover in fullscreen had been disabled, to prevent a related issue. This has been fixed. So show on hover has been enabled again for fullscreen. |

Group activation inconsistant |
When showing then dismissing a group, the behaviour was not consistant, sometimes requiring a second click to show the group again, or hiding all shown hidden items etc. |

Menu bar item group editing |

Items added to a menu bar item group when first created would not be saved, this has been fixed. |

Thanks for all the feedback, I am working hard to fix all the small issues. |
Bartender 5 |

Bartender 5 is a paid upgrade. Bartender 5 has been completely redeveloped for macOS Sonoma. Find out more about Bartender 5 at https://www.macbartender.com/Bartender5/ Bartender 4 is not optimised for macOS Sonoma. If you do not want to upgrade to Bartender 5 and wish to continue using Bartender 4 you might want to avoid installing macOS Sonoma. |
