The checkbox for launch at login would always show as unchecked, this has been fixed

Fix issue installing System Component with version 1.3.0

The previous version would sometimes not detect when System Integrity Protection had been turned off and as such would not try to install its System Component, this has been fixed and a manual option to try installing the System Component has also been added.

Notification Centre Location in menu bar after Restart

Some users have experienced Notification Centre appearing in its original location in the menu bar after restarting OS X and launching Bartender, instead of moving to its pre defined position in the menu bar, this is now fixed.


NOTE: Notification Center Icon Disappearing

We are aware that there are some users are still effected by a bug that makes the Notification Center item in the menu become transparent, clicking on its location will bring back its icon. It seems this bug is being caused by an interaction with something (settings/cache/app) on the effected users OS X login account (trying in a new user account the issue does not seem to happen). We are still actively working on finding the cause of the issue and any information that can be provided by effected users would be greatly appreciated. The best way to do so initially is by sending feedback from Bartender

If Bartender was running when applying the license it was possible to lockup Bartender, this has been fixed.

With version 1.2.25 a change to improve Yosemite support, caused Notification Center to not maintain its position in previous OS X releases. This has been fixed. And now should restore its previous position. If it is still in the wrong position you can ⌘+drag it to the correct position and it should then stay there.

Excessive CPU and energy usage

Along with improvements for everyone some users had experienced extreme CPU and energy usage on Yosemite with Bartender 1.2.24, this should now be fixed.

Rearranging items issues

For some users rearranging items in the menu bar and Bartender Bar using ⌘ + drag could cause flickering, jumping or just not work, it would also not work at all on secondary Monitors, this has all been fixed and it should work a lot better.

Spotlight/Notification Center location changing

With the update to Yosemite both Spotlight and Notification Center changed their ID's as such Bartender lost there set location in the menu bar, you can put them back in the location you want by ⌘ + dragging them. For users updating to Yosemite from now this will not be an issue as we have taken the changed ID's into account.

Bartender can now control Google Chrome menu items, thanks to the Chrome team for working with us on this.

Light Bartender Bar

There is now a hidden defaults setting (LightBartenderBar = true) to make the Bartender Bar light even when Yosemite is in Dark Mode, allowing you to store Dark Mode incompatible apps in the Bartender Bar.

Due to a strange bug in OS X, Launchpad folders would not open for some users when Bartender was running. This is now fixed.

There was some issues with items showing incorrectly in multi-monitor setups under Yosemite, this is now fixed.

Autohide will now work when you click on a Chrome or Finder Window.

In Yosemite Spotlight is now its own process, and was showing under Active Apps, we have moved this to System Items.

In Yosemite Notification Center's menu item is now part of teh System Items. As such we needed to update Bartender to find this, it is now working.

Bug Fixes in 1.2.11

Spotlight not in correct location in Lion and Snow Leopard

In previous versions of 1.2 Spotlight would show in a bad location when hidden by Bartender and using the hotkey to launch Spotlight. This has been fixed.

App's popups displaying in wrong location or not at all

Bartender 1.2 caused some apps including Trickster and Mint to display their popups in the wrong location when hidden by Bartender, this has been fixed.

Apps not showing in Preferences

Some older apps that do not include a new identifier would not show in Bartender 1.2 preferences, this has also been fixed.

Text fields and controls not selectable

With previous 1.2 versions, Bartender would prevent text boxes and controls from being selected in some menu bar apps, such as Omnipresence and Bills To Pay, this has now been fixed.

High CPU usage

Some people have experienced occasional high CPU usage by the disnoted process, this should be fixed.

New Features / Improvements in 1.2

Mavericks Support

Bartender now fully supports the Multi-monitor features of Mavericks, including multiple Menu Bars and spaces. Bartender will hide the menu bar icons on each menu bar, and will display the Bartender Bar on the Active Space/Screen.

Show For Updates for System Items

Show for updates now works with system items, no need to say any more, give it a try its great.

Show For Updates, Image recognition

Bartender now uses image recognition to detect changes in Menu Bar Items, this prevents false positives, i.e. showing when a update didn't really happen and an app just refreshed its state.

Show For Updates, remaining in the Menu Bar until timeout

Previous versions of Bartender would show items in the menu bar from the first update until the timeout, then hide and show again if another update happened. Now an item will show in the Menu Bar from the last update until the specified timeout, so if updates keep happening the item will stay in the menubar.

Power Usage

We have improved Bartenders power usage dramatically to help extend battery life for users of Mavericks.

Compatibility

We have been making major changes to the control code of Bartender to improve compatibility with the few apps that didnt work well with Bartender, these should see a huge improvement, and all apps should work better with Bartender.

Dragging to Bartender

You can now drag items to Bartenders Menu Bar Icon and the default click action will be performed allowing you to drag and drop to apps hidden by Bartender.

Fullscreen detection

If you are on Mountain Lion or newer versions of OS X, Bartender will now detect when switching to a fullscreen app and automatically hide the Bartender Bar, it will then reopen it when you switch to a non fullscreen space, works very nicely on Mavericks with fullscreen apps on a separate display.

OS X Compatibility Checks

Bartender now checks that it is compatible with the version of OS X you are running and will prompt you to inform us of compatibility issues.

New URL Schemas

We have added new url schemas that allow links to directly launch the feedback window, check for updates, and update to test builds. Useful for support.

A general sweep of the UI tidying up.


Bug Fixes in 1.2

Grey System Items

In previous versions System Items would appear slightly grey, instead of black when in the Bartender Bar, this has been fixed.

Bartender filesystem location limits

In previous versions of Bartender had to be in a location accessible by sandboxed apps, such as /Applications/ instead of say ~/Applications/ with this release this is no longer required and Bartender works from any location.

System Items not present on new OS X installs

On new installs of OS X, System Items would not be populated in Bartender Preferences until they were edited in System Preferences; this now works.

Dynamic System Items

Previously dynamic system items would not show in Bartender Preferences, they now show as expected.

Skype Support

With the latest update to Skype they included a security measure that unfortunately also prevented Bartender from working with it. We have found a way to still work with Skype.

LaunchBar Compatibility

Currently LaunchBar does not display a Menubar item that needs controlling as such we detect this and do not allow settings to be added for LaunchBar.

Using discrete graphics on late 2010 MBP's after 10.8.3

Bartender should now not switch to discrete graphics.

SystemUIServer high CPU usage on rare occasions

For some users on rare occasions SystemUIServer would display high CPU usage, this is now fixed.

Tunnelbrick Compatibility

For some users TunnelBrick would create multiple menu bar items when used with Bartender, this is now fixed.

Custom Menu Bar Icon Image large in drop down in Preferences

Selecting a large image for the menu bar icon of Bartender would cause the drop down to display this image larger than other items, this is now fixed.

Warning in log

Previous versions of Bartender would log warnings about apps not being scriptable; this is now fixed.

If the Bartender Bar was shown in a fullscreen space by a hotkey it would show incorrectly, this has been fixed.


Changes in 1.2.8 Beta

Items not showing in the Bartender Bar

In 1.2.6 and 1.2.7 adding an item to the Bartender Bar whilst the Bar was not visible would mean the item may not show in the Bar when it was made visible. This has been fixed.

Position of the Bartender Bar not set correctly on multiple screen setups in Mavericks

The Bartender Bar would not display in its pre-set location when using multiple screens in Mavericks, this has been fixed.

Bartender Bar not showing correctly in Mavericks when using 3 or more screens

We have recreated the issue and fixed this.

Hiding Bartender menu bar icon would prevent the Bartender Bar showing

In previous versions hiding the Bartender menu bar icon would prevent the Bartender Bar showing, this has been fixed.

Bartender Bar not showing correctly in Mavericks when using 3 or more screens

For some users, when using more than 2 screens in Mavericks the Bartender Bar would not show correctly, this release attempts to fix this.

Updating from Bartender 1.0 in Mavericks, System Items would not reappear

Bartender 1.0 has a compatibility issue with Mavericks that when Bartender quits or updates the System items disappear. With Bartender 1.2 we now reinstate the system items if we know Bartender 1.0 has removed them.

Menu Items not moving into Bartender Bar

Some users have experienced items not moving into the Bartender Bar after some time, or after updating from a previous version. This was again caused by the update from 1.0.9, and not having restarted since that update. This should now be fixed. Please contact us if you still see this issue.

Order of Items in Bartender Bar are reversed from 1.0.9

This is now in the correct order.

Spotlight now has Show for Updates

Like other System Items spotlight can now show for updates, good for knowing when its indexing.

For some users who updated from 1.2.2 to 1.2.3 after updating from 1.0.9 without restarting OS X would get in a situation that no Menu Bar Items would work with Bartender 1.2.3, this is fixed with 1.2.4.

Show For Updates, Image recognition

Bartender now uses image recognition to detect changes in Menu Bar Items, this prevents false positives, i.e. showing when a update didn't really happen and an app just refreshed its state.

Show For Updates, remaining in the Menu Bar until timeout

Previous versions of Bartender would show items in the menu bar from the first update until the timeout, then hide and show again if another update happened. Now an item will show in the Menu Bar from the last update until the specified timeout, so if updates keep happening the item will stay in the menubar.

Power Usage

We have improved Bartenders power usage dramatically to help extend battery life for users of Mavericks.

Compatibility

We have been making major changes to the control code of Bartender to improve compatibility with the few apps that didnt work well with Bartender, these should see a huge improvement, and all apps should work better with Bartender.

Dragging to Bartender

You can now drag items to Bartenders Menu Bar Icon and the default click action will be performed allowing you to drag and drop to apps hidden by Bartender.

Fullscreen detection

If you are on Mountain Lion or newer versions of OS X, Bartender will now detect when switching to a fullscreen app and automatically hide the Bartender Bar, it will then reopen it when you switch to a non fullscreen space, works very nicely on Mavericks with fullscreen apps on a separate display.

OS X Compatibility Checks

Bartender now checks that it is compatible with the version of OS X you are running and will prompt you to inform us of compatibility issues.

Grey System Items

In previous versions System Items would appear slightly grey, instead of black when in the Bartender Bar, this has been fixed.

Bartender filesystem location limits

In previous versions of Bartender had to be in a location accessible by sandboxed apps, such as /Applications/ instead of say ~/Applications/ with this release this is no longer required and Bartender works from any location.

System Items not present on new OS X installs

On new installs of OS X, System Items would not be populated in Bartender Preferences until they were edited in System Preferences; this now works.

Dynamic System Items

Previously dynamic system items would not show in Bartender Preferences, they now show as expected.

Skype Support

With the latest update to Skype they included a security measure that unfortunately also prevented Bartender from working with it. We have found a way to still work with Skype.

LaunchBar Compatibility

Currently LaunchBar does not display a Menubar item that needs controlling as such we detect this and do not allow settings to be added for LaunchBar.

Using discrete graphics on late 2010 MBP's after 10.8.3

Bartender should now not switch to discrete graphics.

SystemUIServer high CPU usage on rare occasions

For some users on rare occasions SystemUIServer would display high CPU usage, this is now fixed.

Tunnelbrick Compatibility

For some users TunnelBrick would create multiple menu bar items when used with Bartender, this is now fixed.

Custom Menu Bar Icon Image large in drop down in Preferences

Selecting a large image for the menu bar icon of Bartender would cause the drop down to display this image larger than other items, this is now fixed.

Warning in log

Previous versions of Bartender would log warnings about apps not being scriptable; this is now fixed.

Popup Location

Additional work to improve the popup fix for some apps displaying their popup's in slightly the wrong location.

Non Responsive Menu Bar Apps

After restarting your system and having Bartender launch at login some apps in the menu bar could stop responding to clicks, and restarting Bartender would fix this. With this version this should no longer happen.

Bartender Bar position when switching Screens/Resolutions

The Bartender Bar would appear at different locations with different resolutions/screens. This has now been fixed.

Drag and Drop Support

Bartender should allow you to drag an item up to its icon and this will cause the Bartender Bar to display allowing you to drag things onto menu bar Items in the Bartender Bar, but this has not always worked on all users systems, we have been working on identifying the issue and this version should work for everyone.

Changing Spaces when in Fullscreen App

If you use Bartender to display the full menu bar or display items in the menu bar when in a fullscreen app, Bartender would cause you to switch to another space. This has now been modified so that we do not display the full menu bar when in a fullscreen app (as this would always cause a space change) but will show all menu bar items in the menu bar.

App compatibility improvements

Some apps did not work well with Bartender, work has been done to improve on this.

Code improvement and fixes

We have been working extremely hard to polish up Bartender after releasing 1.0. In this version a lot of effort has been put into stabilizing everything and preventing rare issues.

Notification Center UI bug

In the previous version, if you: Showed the Bartender Bar.
Displayed Notification Centre.
Closed the Bartender Bar and reopened it.
A visual bug appeared that all contained items did not shift with the Bartender Bar frame; this is now fixed.

Missing Icons

Very rarely some users would have icons missing in the Bartender Bar, this should be fixed, we have not seen this issue here, so please do send feedback if you see this.

System Slowdown

Again a very small number of users have reported slowing down of their system after extended periods. We have made many improvements to memory usage and performance to prevent this.

Crashes in other Apps controlled by Bartender

OS X has a bug that would cause some apps controlled by Bartender to crash, this was a very rare issue but an unacceptable one. We have worked around the OS X bug and after a restart the issue should be gone.

Menu Bar Items Reordering after restart / login or adding System Items

There was a bug that could cause items to reorder when you restart, login, or add System Items.
This has now been fixed.
We do have to do some cleanup of the menu bar order list to correct the bug, hence some items may change position initially with this version. Dragging them to their correct location should fix this.

Show Full Menu Bar not working for some users

Show full Menu Bar should clear the Menu Bar of any menu's to allow the maximum space for Menu Bar Items, this feature stopped working for some users in Lion and Mountain Lion after fixing a bug for Snow Leopard. This should now be working for all supported OS's and all users.

Menu Bar Items appearing on right instead of left of other Items

With the introduction of the ability to organize menu bar items, new Menu Bar items started it the right most position. This has now been fixed so that they will load in the left most position as before.

Ordering items inconsistant

When ordering items, some items would jump positions, we have done a lot of work on the rearranging code and it should now be a lot better.

VPN Menu Item not removing after disconnect

The System VPN item would not disappear as it normally would when Bartender was running, this is now working.

Clicking on right most screen location would not activate right most Menu Item

With Bartender running, the rightmost Menu Bar Item would not be at the screen edge, preventing clicking it when mouse is at screen edge. This is now fixed.

Performance Improvements

We have been improving the performance of Bartender, especially for System Items.

Missing Icons

In previous versions it was possible for some items to not appear in the Bartender Bar, leaving blank spaces. This should be better.

Crash and Exception

In version 1.0.3 we had one possible crash, and another exception, these are both now fixed.

Added support for the AirPlay - Display system item.

Buy Now Button showing when licensed

A Buy Now button was still visible after licensing. This is fixed.

Dropzone not working with Bartender correctly

On the previous versions Dropzone would not work with Bartender unless its settings were set each time Bartender started, also the icon for Dropzone could display above other windows, these are both now fixed.

Update causing issues with old version till restart

We have improved the reliability of updates, working correctly when still interacting with the old version. But again if you get any strange behaviour after updating, restarting your Mac, or logging out and back in should fix this.

High CPU Load

It was possible for Bartender to cause high CPU load under some circumstances with earlier versions. This is now fixed.

Its Out!!!

We are incredibly pleased to announce the release of Bartender Version 1.0.

We believe Version 1.0 is fantastic, it has some cool new additions that we are sure you will love.

We cant thank you all enough for the fantastic feedback we have been getting. Due to sheer numbers it has not been possible to reply to you all.
The work is not ending we have more great features we want to add and we also know there are still some outstanding bugs we need to fix, and some we probably don't know about yet, so please do keep the feedback coming!

This means we are officially leaving Beta! Therefore anyone who does not have a license will be on the 4 week trail, starting from the first launch of this new version. Item Rearranging

With this release it is now possible to rearrange all Menu Bar Items in the Bartender Bar, and the Menu Bar!
It is possible to mix Apps and System Items.
Best of all the order is maintained after restarts (as long as Bartender is running).
Simply CMD+Drag an Item to rearrange them.

New Graphics

We have been working with our designer to create a Uniform for Bartender, you can see them in his new icon. We have also updated and tweaked many of the graphics and UI in Bartender.

Show white icon when Bartender Selected

In previous versions, if show highlight was selected, the Bartender Menu Bar Icon would not turn white when highlighted; it does now.

Spotlight window hiding behind the Menu Bar

This has been an issue for a few releases now, but it should definitely be fixed.

Dock Icon always showing

In Snow Leopard, if you used the show full menu bar function, Bartenders Dock icon would become visible and stay visible until Bartender was relaunched. This is now fixed.

Moving, adding or removing System Items would case issues

In previous versions, trying to move a System Item would cause it to be removed, and removing an item would/could leave a gap. This is fixed.

Putting a System Item in the Bartender Bar, then hiding it left a space

This is fixed.

Growl Crash caused by Bartender

In previous versions setting Show for Updated for Growl would cause it to crash, this is now fixed.
Thanks to the Growl guys for bringing this to our attention.

gfxCardStatus show for updates, never goes back

If show for updates was set for gfxCardStatus, when it showed for an update, it would never return to the Bartender Bar, it will now.

Updated Beta End Date

Updating Bartender prevented emptying of Trash

In previous updates, and updating to this version, the old Bartender app would be moved to trash, but still be in use. Installation not working

Some users experienced problems installing Bartender, it simply would not install, or would create a very large file in /Library/ScriptingAdditions/ and would then not work with any apps, both these bugs were caused by Bartender being in a folder other than Applications, and with spaces in the name. This is now fixed and Bartender can be in a subfolder or folder with spaces.

Bartender repeatedly crashing trying to send Crash Report

It has been possible for Bartender to get stuck in a loop, crashing trying to send previous Crash Reports. This has now been fixed.

Autohide Bartender Bar

This has been a big request, now the Bartender Bar autohides.

Apple System Menu Items (Menu Extra's)

This is the first release where we have control of the Menu Extra's.
At present you cannot individually control each menu extra, but can choose to have them all in the Bartender Bar or not.

Sandboxed app compatibility

Previous to this release Bartender only worked with some sandboxed apps. We have made major changes to Bartenders internals to make it compatible with sandboxed apps including 1Password Helper.

RealVNC Server compatibility

RealVNC Server runs with elevated privileges, as such OS X prevent Bartender from interacting with it, because of this we have removed it from automatically showing as a running app in preferences.
